Lady Texans topple Midland 57-46 to secure Western Junior College Athletic Conference title

MIDLAND — Sitting a game up in the conference standings heading into Thursday night's regular season finale, the South Plains College women's basketball team closed out league play with a 57-46 road victory over Midland to secure the Western Junior College Athletic Conference crown at the Al G Langford Chaparral Center.   

With Thursday's win, the Lady Texans earned a No. 1 seed to the NJCAA Region V Tournament, which is slated for March 8-11 at Frenship High School in Lubbock. South Plains closes out the regular season with a record of 18-9, including a 12-2 mark in the WJCAC.

Sophomore Martyna  Czescik led South Plains with 14 points and four boards over 31 minutes, connecting on five of nine shots from the field. Jennifer Silva totaled 12 points and 13 rebounds, dropping in six of 18 attempts from the floor.

Matilda Soderlund totaled 12 points and five rebounds over 40 minutes, while Celia Sumbane chipped in 10 points and snagged eight boards, as the Lady Texans shot a 35.3 percent clip from the field, and knocked down seven 3s in the contest.
