Lady Texans improve to 10-1 in conference play, down Clarendon 63-52 Monday

CLARENDON — Celia Sumbane and Daiysha Brown each netted 17 points Monday as the South Plains College women's basketball team picked up a crucial conference road win, besting Clarendon College 63-52 at Bulldog Gymnasium.

South Plains improves to 16-8 on the year and 10-1 in the WJCAC and will be back home on Thursday when they host Western Texas at 5:45 p.m. on Sophomore Night at the Texan Dome.

Brown was six of 14 from the field to go along with seven boards and handed out five assists over 37 minutes. Sumbane was four of 12 from the floor, nine of 12 from the free throw line, and also dished out four assists over 36 minutes.

Jennifer Silva poured in eight points and snagged a game-high 15 rebounds for South Plains, while Matilda Soderlund chipped in nine points and three rebounds. SPC shot 39 percent from the field and 72.2 percent from the charity stripe. Clarendon shot just 23.2 percent from the floor and was four of 24 from the 3-point line. South Plains won the battle on the glass, outrebounding Clarendon 44-29 and scored 38 points inside the paint.

With three games remaining in league play, SPC holds a one game lead over New Mexico Junior College. Following Thursday's contest, South Plains will be on the road on Feb. 27 in Odessa, before closing out the regular season at Midland on March 2.
