Sumbane drops 20 as Lady Texans hold off Frank Phillips 53-49 Monday in Borger

BORGER — Celia Sumbane led all scorers with 20 points Monday as the South Plains College women's basketball team extended its win streak to nine games, downing Frank Phillips College 53-49 at the BCAC Center.

The Lady Texans improve to 15-7 on the season and sit atop the WJCAC with an unblemished 9-0 mark in league play. SPC will be back home on Thursday when they host No. 23 New Mexico Junior College at 5:45 p.m. at the Texan Dome. Thursday is also Hockley County School Employees Credit Union Night, as HCSECU will be providing a free fajita dinner to all SPC employees, and giving away six $100 cash prizes to SPC faculty and staff. Fans can also enjoy a fajita meal for $5.

Sumbane finished 9 of 13 from the field over 32 minutes, and also tallied six boards and two steals. Matilda Soderlund dropped 11 points over 36 minutes, while Martyna Czescik posted six points and snagged a game-high 12 boards.

South Plains shot 37.3 percent from the field and netted 14 points on second chance opportunities. Frank Phillips shot 37.7 percent from the floor in the contest and finished 7 of 17 from distance.
