Sumbane drops 20 points, Lady Texans remain perfect in conference play with 60-31 rout of Western Texas

SNYDER — Celia Sumbane led all scorers with 20 points as the South Plains College women's basketball team won its fifth straight conference game Thursday, pounding Western Texas 60-31 at Invenergy Court at the WTC Coliseum.

South Plains improves to 11-7 on the year and 5-0 in the WJCAC, and will be back on the floor on Saturday when they host Odessa College at 2 p.m. SPC fans are encouraged to pack the Texan Dome, as ESPN will air the men's and women's basketball games live on ESPN+. Admission to the game is free, fans will be treated to free hamburgers and hot dogs, and the first 200 fans will receive a free SPC basketball t-shirt.

Sumbane finished a blistering nine of 11 from the field, and also tallied eight rebounds, five steals, and two blocked shots over 28 minutes. Vitoria Carvalho netted eight boards and snatched seven rebounds coming off the bench for South Plains, while Daiysha Brown finished with eight boards and five boards over 28 minutes.

The Lady Texans forced 20 turnovers in the contest, resulting in 13 points on the offensive end, and won the battle on the glass, outrebounding Western Texas 43-32. South Plains controlled the interior over four quarters, pouring in 24 points inside the paint, and held Western Texas to an abysmal 27.3 percent shooting clip from the field.
