Lady Texans erase double digit second half deficit, stun No. 11 New Mexico Junior College 63-57 Thursday in Hobbs

HOBBS — The South Plains College women's basketball team erased a 10-point third quarter deficit and rallied in the second half to stun No. 11 New Mexico Junior College 63-57 at Caster Activity Center at Ron Black Court.

South Plains improves to 9-7 on the year and 3-0 in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference and will look to extend their win streak to four games when they play host to Clarendon College at 5:45 p.m. on Jan. 23 at the Texan Dome. Matilda Soderlund led SPC in scoring for the second consecutive game, netting 16 points on five of 10 shooting from the field and was three of five from distance of 37 minutes. Jennifer Silva poured in 15 points and snagged eight boards for South Plains in 27 minutes of action, bucketing six of nine shots from the floor.

Sophomore Celia Sumbane finished with 12 points and six rebounds, while Isabella Jaramillo chipped in nine points coming off the bench. South Plains shot 42.4 percent from the field, dropping in nine 3s and tallied 20 points inside the paint. New Mexico shot just 38.3 percent from the floor and was 2 of 10 from distance in the contest.
