Lady Texans clip Ranger 55-54 Saturday in Hobbs

HOBBS — Celia Sumbane and Jennifer Silva combined for 29 points as the South Plains College women's basketball team outlasted Ranger College 55-54 Saturday at the Casper Activity Center on the campus of New Mexico Junior College.

The Lady Texans close out the fall semester with a record of 6-6 and will be back on the floor on Saturday, January 7 when they travel to Blinn College. South Plains will open conference play on Jan. 12 in Big Spring against Howard College, which will air live on ESPN+.

Sumbane shot 50 percent in the contest, dropping in six of 12 shots from the field, netting 14 points, 12 rebounds, four steals, and a pair of blocked shots over 31 minutes. Silva finished with 15 points, nine boards, and five blocked shots, connecting on seven of 11 attempts from the floor.

Matilda Soderlund chipped in nine points over 32 minutes, finishing a perfect six-for-six from the charity stripe. Vitoria Carvalho tallied six points and eight rebounds as South Plains shot a 38.6 percent clip from the field.
