Clarendon clips Lady Texans 59-53 Monday

LEVELLAND — The South Plains College women's basketball team overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to take a lead in the fourth quarter, but a late run from Clarendon would be the difference in the end as the Lady Bulldogs edged out a 59-53 conference win Monday at the Texan Dome.

South Plains moves to 14-8 on the year and 8-3 in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference as they will look to get back in the win column Thursday when they travel to Snyder to take on Western Texas at 5:45 p.m. The contest will stream live at spctexans.com.

Trailing 48-43 with under six minutes to go, South Plain ripped off an 8-3 run, capped by a runner from Raija Todd to take their first lead of the game with 2:47 to play, 51-50. Following a basket from Ewa Kielar which put the Lady Texans up two, 53-51, Clarendon reclaimed the lead on a triple from Macie Medrano, giving the Lady Bulldogs a 54-53 advantage with 58 ticks left.

Clarendon would push their lead to six, 59-53 with 12 seconds remaining as Joanna Munroe knocked down a pair of free throws to finish off an 8-0 run from the Lady Bulldogs in the final minute.

South Plains shot 26.1 percent from the field and 18.5 percent from distance, led by Viktoria Ivanova who tallied 17 points and three boards over 30 minutes. Celia Sumbane recorded 14 points and six rebounds while Todd chipped in nine points and handed out three assists.

Clarendon' Mah Minthe netted a game-high 20 points and seven rebounds as the Lady Bulldogs shot a 30.3 percent clip from the floor and 25 percent from the 3-point line.
