Midland clips Lady Texans 69-61 in overtime Monday

MIDLAND — The South Plains College women's basketball team suffered its first loss in conference play Monday, falling to Midland College 69-61 in overtime at the Chaparral Center.

SPC moves to 12-6 on the season and 6-1 in league play and will be back on the floor on Feb. 3 in Big Spring against Howard College. Tip is slated for 5:45 p.m. and the matchup will stream live at spctexans.com.

Deadlocked at 56 apiece after 40 minutes, Midland would take a 59-56 advantage on a triple from Makayla Escue to begin the extra period. South Plains answered with a 5-0 run to take a 61-59 lead thanks to a 3 from Martyna Czescik with 2:56 to go. Midland responded as Dana Thompson converted at the bucket to give Midland a 63-61 lead with 1:18 to play.

Midland would extend its lead to four, 65-61 on a layup from Brooke Galvin with just over a minute remaining. The Lady Chaparrals would then go up eight with 18 ticks left as Escue dropped in a pair of free throws to cap a 10-0 run from Midland.   

Sophomore Ashala Moseberry led South Plains with 13 points and eight rebounds, dropping in 5 of 13 shots and was 3 of 8 from distance. Viktoria Ivanova netted 13 points, six boards, and three steals, finishing 5 of 15 from the field and 3 of 7 from the 3-point line. Celia Sumbane recorded 11 points, 12 rebounds, and five steals for South Plains, pouring in 5 of 17 shots over 39 minutes.

South Plains forced 23 turnovers in the contest, resulting in 22 points on the offensive end, but Midland controlled the interior, tallying 38 points inside the paint and received 17 points from their bench.
