Four players record double figures as Lady Texans pummel Western Texas College 82-60 Monday

LEVELLAND — Four players recorded double figures on the offensive end Monday as the South Plains College women's basketball team pummeled Western Texas College 82-60 at the Texan Dome.

South Plains improves to 11-5 on the season and 5-0 in league play and will travel to Odessa on Thursday for a 5:45 p.m. tip at the OC Sports Center. The contest will stream live at spctexans.com and can be heard locally on KLVT Radio AM1230.

"They hurt us with some things in the first half and we got lost on some back door cuts and got outrebounded," South Plains head coach Ara Baten said. "I thought we cleaned that up at halftime and played well defensively in the second half."

Raija Todd led all scorers with 16 points, dropping in 5 of 10 shots from the field and was 2 of 5 from distance over 25 minutes. Ashala Mosberry netted double figures for the third consecutive game, notching 13 points and two boards, sinking 5 of 9 attempts, and was 2 of 6 from distance over 19 minutes.

"I think for us, when we are right defensively everything else kind of falls into place," Baten said. "I didn't think we played well defensively the first 20 minutes, and I think we came back and cleaned it up a little bit. That created some offensive for us and helped us on the offensive end."

Celia Sumbane was a force in the paint, netting 12 points to go along with five boards, four assists, and three steals over 23 minutes. Viktoria Ivanova tallied 12 points, three rebounds, and three assists, knocking down 5 of 11 shots through 32 minutes. Matilda Soderlund and Vitoria Carvalho each provided nine points coming off the bench as South Plains shot 46.3 percent from distance and were 13 of 15 from the free throw line.

"We are getting better, but need to improve and can be a little impatient at times," Baten said. "I would like to see us get the ball to the second and third side and attack that way. We are still trying to force things too much on the front side after one or two passes, but that's just part of growing and part of getting better."
