#7 Lady Texans clip Otero 68-49 Saturday

LEVELLAND — The South Plains College women's basketball team improved to 3-0 on the year Saturday, defeating Otero Junior College 68-49 at the Texan Dome.

The Lady Texans will be back on the court next weekend when they travel to Denison, Texas for the Grayson College Classic Nov. 11-13.

"These kinds of games are good for us," South Plains head coach Ara Baten said. "This was a competitive game and was good for our players. Our kids responded and fought back and they competed hard, which is a great thing."

Celia Sumbane led all scorers with 13 points to go along with seven boards over 24 minutes for SPC, her third consecutive game in double figures. Raija Todd netted 12 points and was 5 of 9 from the floor over 34 minutes, while Ashala Moseberry scored in double figures for the third straight game, dropping in 11 points and snagged eight rebounds for South Plains. Martyna Czescik tallied 11 points and six rebounds as SPC shot 39.6 percent from the hardwood and forced 29 turnovers on the defensive end.

"I thought we got some really big stops on defense, and our kids played hard," Baten said. "I thought we got some critical offensive rebounds to continue possessions and work the clock, and overall we had a good weekend and a good day today."

South Plains held a slight advantage on the glass, outrebounding Otero 34=30, scoring 24 points inside the paint, and totaled 24 points on second-chance opportunities. SPC received 21 points from their bench as nine different players scored in the contest.

"Today was good for us, and it's just good to get out there and play," Baten said. "You start to identify who you are going to be, and who your players are. Those things are hard to do during a scrimmage, and from that standpoint, these types of games are good for us."
