No. 7 Lady Texans top Clarendon 60-48 Saturday

LEVELLAND — The South Plains College women's basketball team received 10 points, 13 rebounds, and seven blocked shots from freshman Debora Reis, her 12th double-double of the year as the seventh-ranked Lady Texans bested Clarendon College 60-48 Saturday afternoon at the Texan Dome.

South Plains improves to 12-3 on the year and 9-2 in the WJCAC and remains tied with Midland College for the conference lead with four games remaining. The Lady Texans will be back on the floor Monday when they host Western Texas College at 5:45 p.m. at the Texan Dome.

"This season is a grind, and every game is tough." South Plains head coach Ara Baten said. "Every game seems to be a possession game, and we have to be disciplined on offense and on defense, and it's definitely a challenge. I thought our rotations defensively were earlier than they have been, and they did a nice job with that. We didn't clear up the rebounds as well as I would have liked to, but as far as the interior defense goes, I thought we did a pretty good job."

Leading 12-11 after 10 minutes, South Plains outscored Clarendon 19-9 in the second quarter to take a 31-20 lead into the lockerroom at the half. Reis recorded five points and four boards at the midway point as the Lady Texans forced Clarendon to shoot just 21 percent to open the contest.

South Plains proved to have a clear advantage inside, outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 32-22 inside the paint, netting 11 points on second-chance opportunities, and received 31 points from their bench. Sophomore Shayla Moseberry scored a season-high 14 points on 4 of 10 shooting and was 3 of 6 from distance over 16 minutes.

"Shayla is another good player that can do some things for ur," Baten said. "There's a lot of good competition on our perimeter right now, and getting her back I think she only adds to it. We're still working on moving the ball and making the extra pass and getting them to understand the importance of playing inside out. These are things we are working on each day and trying to get better at."

Sophomore Jordan Brown totaled 10 points and three assists, knocking down 4 of 7 shots from the field while Martyna Czescik chipped in nine points and snagged six rebounds. Viktoria Ivanova finished with seven points over 20 minutes as the Lady Texans shot 34.9 percent in the contest.
