No. 3 Lady Texans fall to No. 16 Midland 70-62

MIDLAND — The third-ranked South Plains College women's basketball team dropped their first game in conference play Thursday, falling to No. 16 Midland College 70-62 at the Al G. Langford Chaparral Center.

The Lady Texans move to 8-2 on the year and 5-1 in the WJCAC and return home Monday for a 5:45 matchup against Frank Phillips College at the Texan Dome. The contest will stream live at spctexans.com.

Trailing 38-32 at the break, Midland opened the second half with a 19-5 run to take a commanding 57-37 lead heading into the final stint. South Plains would answer back and get within six with under a minute to play, but Midland would knock down a series of crucial free throws down the stretch to escape with the win.

Debora Reis led all scorers with 17 points and 11 boards, recording her eighth double-double of the year. Reis finished 8 of 11 from the field and also picked five steals and swatted a pair of blocked shots over 27 minutes. Viktoria Ivanova poured in 11 points and six boards, netting 5 of 17 shots over 24 minutes.

Julia Stenberg provided a spark off the bench for the Lady Texans, connecting on a pair of 3s in the second half to finish with nine points over 11 minutes. Sophomore Jordan Brown chipped in eight points and snagged five boards as the Lady Texans shot 35.8 percent from the floor and just 27 percent from distance.

Nyaduoth Lok led Midland with 16 points and eight rebounds, pouring in 7 of 12 shots over 29 minutes. D'Aja Bryant chipped in 10 points on 4 of 7 shooting coming off the bench as Midland shot 45.5 percent from the field and were 1 of 9 from the 3-point line.
