LEVELLAND — Debora Reis led all scorers with 17 points, her ninth consecutive game in double figures, as the third-ranked South Plains College women's basketball team pummeled Clarendon 79-58 Monday night at the Texan Dome.
South Plains improves to 8-1 on the season and 5-0 in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference and will return to the hardwood on Feb. 25 at 5:45 p.m. at Midland College.
"I thought we played better tonight," South Plains head coach Ara Baten said. "We played some really good minutes, and we have some things we can clean up, but overall I thought our kids played well. We're starting to understand what we're looking for and shared the ball a little bit better. We took a lot of good shots and rebounded well and overall we played well."
Leading 13-12 after ten minutes the Lady Texans opened the second quarter with a 13-3 run capped by a jumper from sophomore Jordan Brown to push the lead to 28-15 with 3:14 to play in the first half. Viktoria Ivanova knocked down a jump shot with four seconds left before the break to give South Plains a 35-17 lead at the midway point.
South Plains would continue to pour it on in the second half, shooting over 47 percent from the field in the contest and knocked down six 3s. Reis finished 8 of 11 from the field and recorded seven rebounds over 22 minutes. Ivanova chipped in 14 points on 6 of 9 shooting and was 2 of 3 from distance in 22 minutes.
"We had pressure on the ball defensively and for the most part forced them to take tough contested shots," Baten said. "We didn't let them loose at the three-point line, and overall I'm pleased with our effort tonight."
Brown netted 13 points and a team-high five assists, dropping in 5 of 6 shots from the floor and was 3 of 4 from the free throw line. Julia Stenberg netted nine points off the bench for South Plains, knocking down a trio of 3s over 18 minutes. Dyane Offutt dropped in eight points on 4 of 8 shooting with the Lady Texans scoring 36 points inside the paint and 11 points on second-chance opportunities.
