No. 5 Lady Texans down Western Texas 66-53

SNYDER — The fifth-ranked South Plains College women's basketball team extended its win streak to five games with a 66-53 conference road win over Western Texas College Thursday night at the Coliseum.

Leading 29-22 at the break, South Plains ripped off a 7-0 run to begin the second half as Grace Hunter put the Lady Texans up 36-22 with a 3 with 7:47 to go in the third. Western Texas would trim the deficit to six, 47=41 at the 1:20 mark of the third quarter on a jumper from Shauntom Rodgers. The Lady Westerners would then get within three, 47-44 on a 3 from Carrie Lacy with 25 ticks left in the quarter.

South Plains would answer back with a 6-0 run capped off by a layup from Viktoria Ivanova to put the Lady Texans up 53-44 with 5:41 remaining. The Lady Texans would push the lead to 11, 62-51 at the 3:27 mark of the fourth on a jumper from Hunter. South Plains would hold the Lady Westerners to a single bucket over the final three minutes to remain unbeaten in the WJCAC.

Freshman Debora Reis recorded her seventh double-double of the year, dropping in 17 points to go along with 10 boards and a season-high seven blocked shots, connecting on 7 of 12 shots from the field over 31 minutes. Ivanova scored a season-high 17 points, knocking down 7 of 9 shots from the floor in 21 minutes for South Plains.

Hunter chipped in 14 points for the Lady Texans while Jordan Brown had eight points and Serena Waters netted three points and a game-high five steals. The Lady Texans shot a 42.6 percent clip for the game while forcing 27 turnovers on the defensive end resulting in 14 points. South Plains dominated inside, netting 34 points inside the paint and received 25 points from their bench.

Now 7-1 on the year and 4-0 in league play, the Lady Texans return home on Monday to take on Clarendon College at 5:45 p.m. at the Texan Dome.
