LEVELLAND — Johanna Teder scored a season-high 20 points and dished out seven assists as the second-ranked South Plains College women's basketball team pummeled No. 18 Midland College 75-42 Monday night.

With the win, South Plains improves to 21-0 on the year and 5-0 in the WJCAC. The Lady Texans will be back on the hardwood Thursday when they travel to Borger to take on Frank Phillips College with tip slated for 5:45 p.m.

"As a freshman, I didn't know what to expect from a game like this, so I just took coaches' advice and tried to do what she told me to do," Teder said. "I wanted to prove that I can play and wanted this game so bad. We wanted to prove something tonight and we did that. I was trying to play with consistency and it helps build confidence and you have to play with consistency every game."

Teder knocked down 8 of 13 shots from the floor and was 2-for-4 from distance as the Lady Texans shot 47.4 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from the 3-point line. Sophomore Sarah Shematsi went off for 15 points and snagged six boards, draining 6 of 9 shots from the floor over 26 minutes.

Ashala Moseberry dropped in 12 points and dished out a pair of assists in 24 minutes of play while sophomore center Ruth Koang netted 10 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

"One thing about Johanna and all of our guards, they have been spending extra time in the gym all week," South Plains head coach Cayla Petree said. "One thing we've talked about is sprinting into space with confidence and if they get a good look to have the confidence to pull it. They have definitely put the time in and Johanna lives in the gym and we want her to continue to do what we know she can do."

South Plains was just as impressive on the defensive end, holding Midland to a season-low point total and a 21.3 percent clip from the field, their worst shooting clip of the year. South Plains tallied 29 points on 26 forced turnovers and chipped in 28 points inside the paint.

Ella Tofarono led Midland with eight points and seven rebounds, connecting of 3 of 4 shots from the hardwood. Makayla Escue finished with five points and four rebounds as the Lady Chaparrals shot just 11.1 percent from distance.

"I think defense is a pride thing, and a lot of times players get mad when they smoke off a layup or airball a three, and I think they should be just as upset when their man scores," Petree said. "There's nothing that's more one on one than defense, and we talked beating them to the spot all week. We're pretty athletic so when we get our mind the right way I think our defense can definitely be one of our strengths."
