No. 2 Lady Texans pound Coastal Bend 121-56 Friday in season opener

LEVELLAND — Sophomore Oceane Robin scored a career-high 19 points as the second-ranked South Plains College women's basketball team rolled to a 121-56 win in their season opener Friday against Coastal Bend College at the Texan Dome.

The Lady Texans will be off on Saturday before returning to the hardwood at 1 p.m. on Sunday against Northwest Kansas Technical College. The contest will stream live at spctexans.com and can be heard on KLVT Radio Levelland as Michael Wiiest will call the courtside action.

Robin finished 8 of 14 from the floor, grabbed four boards and handed out four assists as the Lady Texans shot 49 percent from the field with six players scoring in double figures. 6-foot-5 center Ruth Koang tied a career-best with 21 points to go along with eight rebounds coming off the bench for South Plains, dropping in 8 of 13 shots and was 5-for-7 from the charity stripe.

Freshman Ka'Lia Smith totaled 16 points and seven rebounds in her first game for the Lady Texans, sinking 5 of 8 shots from the floor and hauled in seven boards and picked four steals in 19 minutes of action. The sophomore duo of Sarah Shematsi and Caroline Germond combined for 24 points, each netting 12 and combined to shoot 10 of 22 from the floor.

Asia McCoy poured in 11 points and six rebounds, five on the offensive end in her first start for South Plains, chipping in 5 of 9 shots from the hardwood over 17 minutes. The Lady Texans garnered 50 points off 41 turnovers from Coastal Bend and tallied 64 points inside the paint and 22 on second-chance opportunities.

South Plains dominated the glass, outrebounding the Lady Cougars 60-26 and forced their counterpart to shoot just 31 percent from the field and 26.1 percent from distance. Jada Sheridan led Coastal Bend in scoring with 13 points on 5 of 7 shooting from the field, while Jada Mitchell had seven and Tianie Johnson totaled six.
