No. 1 Lady Texans fall to No. 15 New Mexico Junior College 68-65 Thursday

HOBBS — Despite four players scoring in double figures, the top-ranked South Plains College women's basketball team fell to No. 15 New Mexico Junior College 68-65 Thursday at Ron Black Court at the Caster Activity Center.

Their first loss since Nov. 9, the Lady Texans move to 25-2 on the season and still sit atop the Western Junior College Athletic Conference with a 10-1 mark with three games remaining. South Plains will return home on Monday when they take on Western Texas College on Hockley County School Employees Credit Union Night at the Texan Dome.  

South Plains shot 34.4 percent from the floor and were 8 of 23 from the 3-point line in the contest. Freshman Sarah Shematsi led the Lady Texans with 15 points, five boards, and six assists, dropping in 6 of 18 attempts from the field. Sophomore Keke Hunter netted 14 points and 10 rebounds in 35 minutes of action while Gabbie Green poured in 13 points and grabbed six rebounds.

New Mexico Junior College (20-4, 8-2) shot a 45 percent clip from the field despite shooting just 4 of 15 from the 3-point line. Thamires Andrade led all scorers with 21 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Lady Thunderbirds.

Mayra Caicedo netted 11 points and three rebounds while Jurnee President chipped in 11 points and two rebounds. Eternati Willock recorded 10 points and eight boards for New Mexico and Sydnee Wynn dropped in eight points and eight rebounds.
