No. 1 Lady Texans pummel Frank Phillips 92-58 Monday

LEVELLAND — Gabbie Green recorded 26 points, four rebounds and four assists as the top-ranked South Plains College women's basketball team pummeled Frank Phillips 92-58 Monday night at the Texan Dome.

South Pains improves to 24-1 on the season and 9-0 in the WJCAC, extending their win streak to 21 games.

"When you have three payers score in double figures it makes any team extremely hard to guard," South Plains head coach Cayla Petree said. "It's kind of like a pick your poison type thing, and a lot of that goes to their teammates who have to share the basketball to make that happen. When you have 18 assists on 33 made field goals, that shows your team is sharing the basketball and that's a stat we value. I continue to be impressed with Gabbie Green, and she takes ownership of the attacking mindset we preach for 40 minutes."

Green finished 11 of 18 from the field as the sophomore from Bellville, Texas scored in double figures for the third consecutive game. Sophomore Keke Hunter chipped in 20 points to go along with nine boards and a pair of assist coming off the bench for the Lady Texans. Freshman Sarah Shematsi bucketed 6 of 12 attempts from the field, dropping in 20 points and seven boards in 30 minutes of action for South Plains.

"We're just trying to keep growing every day and don't want to try and compare ourselves to any other team," Green said. "I definitely think we could have done better and executed better on offense, but we're going to keep working hard and getting better as a group."

South Plains shot over 48 percent from the floor while holding the Lady Plainsmen to a 36 percent clip from the field. Frank Phillips (8-13, 1-8) finished just 8 of 27 from the 3-point line as the Lady Texans forced 26 turnovers in the contest resulting in 28 points on the offensive end.

The Lady Texans dominated the interior, netting 56 points inside the paint and outrebounded the Lady Plainsmen 44-18 on the glass. Jordan Taylor led Frank Phillips with 18 points and five rebounds while Jazmin Rios tallied 10 points and A'yona Wilson chipped in eight.

South Plains will be on the road Thursday when they travel to Big Spring for a 5:45 p.m. tip against Howard College. The game will be streaming live at spctexans.com and Michael Wiiest of KLVT Radio Levelland will call the courtside action with pregame slated for 5:30 p.m.
