Lady Texans fall to second-ranked New Mexico Junior College 63-49 Monday night in Hobbs

HOBBS, N.M. — The South Plains College women's basketball team fell to the second-ranked New Mexico Junior College Lady Thunderbirds 63-49 Monday at the Casper Activity Center.

New Mexico's (19-0, 3-0) Jurnee President led all scorers with 18 points, knocking down 5 of 11 shots from the field including a trio of 3s. Thamires Andrade netted 13 points to go along with four rebounds and three steals while Alexes Bryant and Danielle Craft each chipped in 10 points.

Chantel Govan led the Lady Texans (13-7, 0-4) with 13 points, four rebounds and also dished out four assists in 36 minutes. Freshman Gabbie Green bucketed 10 points and grabbed five boards while Christina Baker and Maddie Dorris each chipped in eight points and La'Praisjah Johnson scored six.

New Mexico shot 41.4 percent from the floor, their second-lowest percentage of the season, and scored 22 points off 16 forced turnovers. The Lady Thunderbirds controlled the interior as they bucketed 30 points inside the paint over four quarters.  

South Plains shot 37.5 percent from the field and knocked down seven 3s in the contest. Green scored in double digits for the 12th time this season and Govan's trio of 3s tied her career-high from the perimeter.

South Plains will look to return to the win column on Thursday when they host Western Texas College, with tipoff slated for 5:45 p.m. at the Texan Dome. The game will be streaming live at spctexans.com, and Michael Wiiest of KLVT Radio Levelland will call the courtside action with pregame tabbed for 5:30 p.m.
