Lady Texans rally to down Scottsdale 75-53 Saturday in Arizona

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The South Plains College women's basketball team rallied from a 27-21 first half deficit to down Scottsdale Community College 75-53 on Saturday at the Bill Culver Memorial Classic to improve to 12-4 on the year.

Freshman Mikayla Kuehne led all scorers with 23 points including four 3s, all of which came in the second half. Gabbie Green scored in double figures for the second consecutive game as the freshman tallied 15 points for the Lady Texans. Lubbock product Chelsea Hunter finished with 13 points, 10 coming in the second half, while Chantel Govan totaled seven points and La'Praisjah Johnson chipped in six.

Trailing 15-5 after one quarter, South Plains outscored Scottsdale 16-12 in the second quarter as Govan and Green combined for 11 points to trim the lead to six. The Lady Texans would retake the lead early in the second half thanks to a 28-point third quarter, 13 points coming from Kuehne including a pair of 3s to begin the third.

South Plains continued to find the net in final stint as Kuehne and Green combined 12 points in the final 10 minutes as the Lady Texans outscored Scottsdale 16-12 in the final frame. Freshman Alexis Popham poured in five points in the fourth quarter and hunter added five.

South Plains will conclude their four-game road trip in Arizona on Sunday when they tipoff against Chandler-Gilbert at 12 p.m. MST.
