Lady Texans fall to Cochise 49-43 on Friday in Arizona

THATCHER, Arizona — The South Plains College women's basketball team fell to Cochise College 49-43 on Friday at the Eastern Arizona College Classic.

South Plains' Mikayla Kuehne led all scorers with 13 points in 26 minutes, knocking down four 3s and hauled in three boards. Chantel Govan finished with 11 points on 4 of 12 shooting from the floor for the Lady Texans.

Chochise was led by sophomore Deezha Battle who finished with 12 points and five boards and was 8-for-8 from the charity stripe.  Jazzmyn Hughes finished with eight points for the Lady Apaches, while Mamita Diagne and Awa Keita each had seven points.

South Plains led 26-24 at the midway point in a contest that had eight lead changes and was tied six times over the course of the game. Cochise used a 10-2 run late in the second half to pull away in the final 20 minutes. South Plains garnered 11 points off 18 forced turnovers and outscored Cochise 13-3 from behind the arc.

"I am really pleased with the commitment we have from such a young team," South Plains head coach Cayla Petree said. "Cochise is a very good team, and we were able to press a little bit and drop back into our zone, and in the end, it was a very low scoring game. We took care of the basketball, and we were able to create clean looks for our shooters. I think the more confident they become in our offense the more belief they will have in their ability to play at this level."

The Lady Texans will look to bounce back on Saturday when they tipoff against Eastern Arizona at 1 p.m.
