SCOTTSDALE, Arizona—The seventh ranked South Plains College Lady Texans improved their win streak to 14 on Wednesday night following a 61-54 victory over Phoenix College in the opening round of the Bill Culver Memorial Classic at Scottsdale Community College.

Sophomore Jasauen Beard led all scorers with 15 points, nine of which game in the final 20 minutes. Brittany Smith totaled 14 points for South Plains while Yanina Inkina finished with 12. Madeline Dorris dominated on the interior for the Lady Texans as the freshman from Weatherford, Texas totaled nine points

Wednesday's victory marks the first of four games in a four-day stretch for the Lady Texans who will now shift their focus to Mesa Community College on Thursday at 4 p.m. MST. South Plains will look to push their win streak to 15, which dates back to Nov. 4, when they tipoff with the Lady Thunderbirds on Thursday afternoon.

"I was really pleased with how much energy we had in the first quarter, South Plains head coach Cayla Petree said. "We jumped out to a big lead and if it wouldn't have been for that big first quarter I don't know if we have been able to hang on and win it. Our conditioning suffered a little bit over the 11-day break, but overall I'm really proud of girls and the poise they showed down the stretch."
