Lady Texans Open Season In Dominating Fashion

Levelland— The South Plains College Lady Texans basketball team picked up their first win of the 2015 campaign in dominating fashion Friday night, routing Trinidad State Junior College 84-34 at the Texan Dome.

South Plains' Aliezza Brown led all scorers with 23 points, including shooting 40% from the three-point line. Evelyn Omemmah scored 15 points for the Lady Texans, while Elizabeth Cera finished with 14.

SPC jumped out to a commanding 24-8 lead after one quarter, shooting 69% from the field in the first 10 minutes. The second quarter saw much of the same, as the Lady Texans outscored their opponent 25-11 in the second frame, taking a 49-19 lead into the half.

"I can tell our focus was really dialed in today at shoot-around, but you really never go into a game thinking it's going to turn out like this," South Plains coach Cayla Petree said. "I'm very happy with the way we shared the basketball tonight, and I thought we played very unselfish basektball. We had tremendous energy on defense, and it was a good team win for everyone."

The Lady Texans continued to push the pace on defense in the second half, holding the Lady Trojans to just five points in the third quarter, forcing them to shoot an abysmal 14% from the field.

Points in the paint were at a premium for South Plains, outscoring their counterparts 33-8 inside. SPC finished what they started in the fourth quarter, allowing just nine points in the final 10 minutes of the contest.

"I don't say much after games win or lose, we enjoy enjoy the win and celebrate for about a minute and half, and focus on the next game and what we have to do," Petree said. "They were dancing and jumping around in there a little bit, and then we got right back to work on what we're going to do tomorrow against a talented Dallas Diesel team."
