Lady Texans Win Fifth In A Row

LEVELLAND, Texas - The South Plains College Lady Texans, currently ranked 21st in the latest NJCAA polls, are heading to the NJCAA Region 5 tournament on a five game winning streak as they defeated New Mexico Junior College 53-37 at the Texan Dome.  The victory improves South Plains record to 24-6 overall and 11-3 in Western Junior College Athletic Conference play.


The two teams battled in the first half, with neither team able to dominate the other.  Five minutes into the ballgame SPC led by five points, but the Lady T-Birds knocked brought themselves within a point just a few minutes later.  With 7:51 remaining in the half, SPC faced their first deficit of the game, 14-13.  Rachel Gray then put them up by two with when she nailed a shot from beyond the arc. 
Two minutes later Samiesha Williams drove in for a layup, putting the Lady Texans up by four.  NMJC and South Plains would then exchange a couple of buckets.  With only eight ticks left on the clock, New Mexico's Dominique Haywood hit a 3-pointer and the teams went to the locker room with the Lady Texans leading by a score of 20-19.

In the opening seconds of the second half, NMJC's janisha Young converted a field goal to put the T-Birds ahead for the second and final time of the game.  The Lady Texans retook the lead on their way to an 11-0 over the next three minutes, making the score 31-21.  After the Lady T-Birds nailed a 3-pointer to get within seven points, SPC proceeded to hammer out a 14-6 run and led 45-30 just past the midway point of the half, and led by as many as 19 before settling for a 16 point victory, 53-37.

Immediately following the game, South Plains honored the Sophomores who played their final game at the Texan Dome.  The Lady Texan sophomores boasted a two year record of 50 wins and only 10 losses, helped last years team win the WJCAC championship, and never lost a game at home.  The Lady Texans sophomores are:  McKinsie East, Briana Goss, Rachel Gray, Lindsey Lawless, and Chasity Workman.

The Lady Texans get a little time off before they begin the Region 5 tournament on Saturday, March 7 at Lubbock Christian University.  The Lady Texans will tip-off at 12 p.m. and should know who they are playing tomorrow.
