South Plains dominates day one of NMJC Indoor Invitational in Hobbs

HOBBS—With 67 national qualifying marks on tap, the South Plains College track and field teams were back in action on Friday at the NMJC Indoor Invitational at the Ross Black Field of Champions.

Cha'Kaylin Gilbert and Melody Korie kicked off the meet with a two-three finish in the women's long jump as Gilbert jumped 18' 0.5" while Korie posted a final mark of 18' 0.25". Gilbert would then go on to take fourth in the women's triple jump posting a final distance of 38' 9", while Korie took sixth with a jump of 36' 2.75".

Derrick Monroe earned the top honors in the men's long jump after finishing with a final mark of 24' 0.75". Monroe would then go on to take third in the triple jump as the sophomore from Yuma, Arizona leaped 46' 7.25" earning a national qualifying mark. Kwaume McGee also earned a top five finish with his final mark of 44' 3.5", good enough for fourth place.

Patrick Johnson went on to take first in the men's 60 meter dash with a time of 7.35, while Jonathan Witt placed second with a 7.36. Zach Hancock took the top spot in the men's high jump as the Orlando, Florida native jumped 5' 11.75". Johnson wasn't far behind with his mark of 5' 8.25", good enough for second place.

Hancock would also earn first place honors in the long jump with a mark of 21' 2", while Witt took second with a jump of 21' 1.25". Johnson earned the top honors in the men's shot put with a final throw of 41' 8.5", while Hancock placed second with a mark of 36' 8.25".
