SPC Track and Field set to compete at Charlie Thomas Invitational at Texas A&M University this weekend

LEVELLAND—The South Plains College men's and women's track and field team will make their second appearance of the 2017 Indoor season this weekend when they travel to College Station to compete in the Charlie Thomas Invitational on the campus of Texas A&M University.

The Texans and Lady Texans kicked off the 2017 campaign on Jan. 14 at the University of Oklahoma with the two teams earning a combined 34 national qualifying marks. South Plains will be competing against some of the top NCAA Div I schools this weekend, per usual, including: Texas A&M, Baylor, Cincinnati, Clemson, Houston, Rice, TCU and UCLA.

In their first meet in January, Robert Dunning flew by the competition en route to a first place finish in the men's 60m hurdles with a final time of 7.97, while William Watson and Patrick Johnson placed third and fifth with times of 8.14 and 8.77, respectively. Poro Gahekave took second in the women's 800m for the Lady Texans with a time of 2:24.67. Natasha McDonald and Agnes Abrocquah placed second and third for the Lady Texans in the women's 600-yard run with their times of 1:25.99 and 1:29.56.

The Texans placed four runners inside the top 10 in the men's 600-yard run, as Okeen Williams, Rayan Holmes, Montel Hood and Junior Charles placed third, fifth, sixth and ninth, respectively. The Lady Texans' Safia Bright placed fifth in the women's 200-meter dash with her time of 25.67, while Mclendon Hill, Jonathan Witt and Patrick Johnson placed second, third and fourth for the Texans in the men's shot put.

Felicia Frimpong and Melody Korie placed second and third in the women's long jump. Frimpong placed second with a final jump of 18-6 ½, while Korie took third with a distance of 18-3. Naomi Kerari placed third in the women's high jump with a final mark of 4-11 ½.
