  • South Plains rodeo earns top 10 national finishes Saturday at College National Finals Rodeo

    CASPER, Wyoming — On the final day of the 2018 college rodeo season, South Plains College was well represented as three athletes earned top 10 national honors at the College National Finals Rodeo Saturday night. In his final stand for the Texans, South Plains' Chet Boren finished his career at South Plains with a seventh place national finish in steer wrestling. A sophomore from Vernal, Utah, Boren turned in a final time of 5.9 in Saturday's finals which consisted of the top 12 collegiate steer wrestlers in the country.

The South Plains College rodeo program added another notch to that testament Friday night as they qualified three athletes for the College National Finals Rodeo which is set for 7 p.m. MDT Saturday night and will be broadcast live on ESPN3. "It's been a good week, and overall our kids went out and performed well," South Plains head coach Kerry Doster said. "We didn't draw the best in some of the first few rounds, but the kids stayed focused and I was really pleased overall with what they were able to accomplish."

    CASPER, Wyoming — With the 2018 College National Finals Rodeo entering the final stretch, South Plains’ Chet Boren and Alex Odle will both make their third and final runs in their respective events on Friday, vowing for a spot in Saturday's finals. After clocking two of the top times in her first two runs in barrel racing, Odle will return to the arena Friday night at 7 p.m. MDT to make her final run. Odle turned in the ninth best time in her first run with a 14.93, which she followed up with the fifth fastest time in her second run with a 14.55.
  • Lady Texan rodeo makes strong push on day three of College National Finals Rodeo

    CASPER, Wyoming — The South Plains College women’s rodeo team continued to make their push for a spot in Saturday’s finals as they impressed once again Tuesday on day three of the College National Finals Rodeo. Sophomore Alex Odle turned in the fifth best time in barrel racing in her second of three runs, posting a time of 14.55. Odle now sits fourth overall with a 29.48 average with one run remaining. The top 12 contestants in each event advance to Saturday’s finals. South Plains’ Lariat Larner is just five spots out of the 12th position after turning in a time of 10.9 in breakaway roping on Tuesday. Larner currently sits 17th overall amongst 40 contestants with a 14.9 average after two runs.
  • Lady Texans continue to impress on day four of College National Finals Rodeo

    CASPER, Wyoming — South Plains sophomore Lariat Larner was the lone competitor competing for the Lady Texans on day four of the College National Finals Rodeo Wednesday evening vowing for a spot in Saturday’s finals. Larner, who is representing the Lady Texans in goat tying and breakaway roping, made her third run in goat tying, turning in a final time of 8.6. With a final average of 21.8, Larner currently sits eighth overall. Larner is joined inside the top 10 by teammate Jenna Dallyn who is currently second in goat tying with a 20.0 average.
  • Lady Texan rodeo turns in pair of top 10 finishes Monday at College National Finals Rodeo

    CASPER, Wyoming — Action from the College National Finals Rodeo continued on Monday as the Lady Texans finished the day with a pair of athletes ending the day inside the top 10 in their respective events. South Plains’ Alex Odle competed for the orange and blue in barrel racing Monday, clocking a 14.93 in her first of three runs and is currently tied for ninth amongst 43 contestants. Sophomore Lariat Larner made her second run in breakaway roping, turning in a time of 10.9, and currently sits in 10th overall with an average time of 14.9 after two runs. Larner also competed for the Lady Texans in goat tying and currently sits in eighth overall after a first run time of 6.7. Sophomore Jenna Dallyn also competed for South Plains in goat tying as the Nanton Toliro, Canada native is tied for 16th amongst 46 contestants after her first run, turning in a final time of 7.0. South Plains’ cowboy Chet Boren made his first run in steer wrestling, clocking a time of 5.2 and is currently 14th overall amongst 34 contestants. Boren, who is also competing in tiedown roping was unable to score in his first run on Monday.
  • South Plains rodeo makes first appearance of 2018 College National Finals Rodeo Sunday in Wyoming

    CASPER, Wyoming —  Action got underway on Sunday at the 2018 College National Finals Rodeo as Lariat Larner was the lone representative competing for the Lady Texans on day one in breakaway roping. Larner turned in a first round time of 4.0 and will make her second of three runs in the 7 a.m. slack on Monday where she will also compete for the Lady Texans in goat tying. South Plains’ Alex Odle and Jenna Dallyn will make their first of three runs in their respective events as Dallyn will compete in goat tying and Odle will compete in barrel racing. Both events are slated to begin in the 7 a.m. slack on Monday. Sophomore cowboy Chet Boren will saddle up Monday morning looking to capture national gold in both tiedown roping and steer wrestling, both events which are set to begin Monday morning at 7 a.m. Monday’s schedule of events:

    LEVELLAND — After compiling the most successful season in program history, the South Plains College women's rodeo team will travel to Casper, Wyoming June 10-16 to compete against the nation's best at the 2018 College National Finals Rodeo. Led by head coach Kerry Doster, who was named the 2018 Western Junior College Athletic Conference Women's Head Coach of the Year after leading the Lady Texans to their third consecutive Western Junior College Athletic Conference crown, the Lady Texans will kick things off on June 10th at 4 p.m. MDT when Lariat Larner takes to the arena in the breakaway roping event.

    STEPHENVILLE — The South Plains College women’s rodeo team punched their ticket to the College National Finals Rodeo on Saturday as they capped off the regular season at the Tarleton State University Rodeo. The Lady Texans added 60 points to their season total and end the year second overall in the Southwest Region with 1,696 points. Texas Tech won the region with 1,763 points, and Tarleton took third with 1,644 points. The Lady Texans will travel to Casper, Wyoming June 10-16 to compete for the program’s first-ever national title.  
  • South Plains rodeo turns in pair of top finishes Friday in Stephenville

    STEPHENVILLE — The South Plains College men’s and women’s rodeo teams wrapped up day two of the Tarleton State University Rodeo on Friday turning in a pair of top finishes proceeding Saturday’s final round. Parker Emola clocked a 4.3 in the long round in steer wrestling and currently holds the top position heading into Saturday. Emola is joined in the top five by fellow Texan Chet Boren who turned in a 6.4 and is currently tied for fifth. Boren entered the weekend second in the men’s all-around standings with the top two point-getters advancing to the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming in June. In the team roping event, South Plains’ Jhett Trenary and Stefan Ramone posted the top time in Friday’s long round with a 5.7. Kade Sherwood also finds himself in contention heading into Saturday as he paired up with Weston Podzemny of Ranger College as the duo clocked a 14.1. Ramone is also tied for 10th in tiedown roping after running a 10.9 on Friday.

    LEVELLAND — With just one rodeo remaining in the 2017-2018 season, the South Plains College men's and women's rodeo teams will return to the arena April 19-21 in Stephenville at the Tarleton State University Rodeo. The Lady Texans enter the final week eyeing the program's first-ever regional title as they sit atop the leaderboards in the Southwest Region with 1,636 points, holding an edge over Tarleton State who's currently in second with 1,534 points, and Texas Tech, who is currently in the third spot with 1,528 points. The top two teams in the region will advance to the College National Finals Rodeo in June in Casper, Wyoming. The Texans also find themselves inside the top 10 in the region, currently sitting in seventh with 1,465 points.
  • Sherwood captures event title, Lady Texans hold on to region lead Saturday in Big Spring

    BIG SPRING — Kade Sherwood won the team roping event title and Lariat Larner placed sixth in breakaway roping as the South Plains College men's and women's rodeo teams capped off the Howard College Rodeo Saturday night. Larner tied for the fastest time in the long round with a  2.3 but missed in Saturday's finals, tallying 70 points for the Lady Texans who will head to Stephenville April 19-21 for their final rodeo of the season sitting atop the Southwest Regional standings. "Lariat split in the breakaway roping and ended up with 70 points which is crucial for us," South Plains head coach Kerry Doster said. "This is the toughest region in the nation, and the fact that it's going to come down to the final rodeo, this is how it should be. When you have this many quality programs in one region, there's no surprise it's going to come down to the final week."  
  • South Plains rodeo primed for Howard College Rodeo April 12-14

    LEVELLAND — With just two rodeos remaining in the 2017-2018 season, the South Plains College men’s and women’s rodeo teams will return to the arena April 12-14 in Big Spring at the Howard College Rodeo. The Lady Texans enter week eight atop the leaderboards in the Southwest Region with 1,566 points, while Tarleton State is second with 1,419 points. Texas Tech remains in contention with 1,218 points, and Odessa College is currently fourth with 1,158 points. The Texans currently sit in sixth in the regional standings with 1,290 points and will look to add to their season total this weekend. South Plains lassoed a pair of event titles a week ago in Snyder at the Western Texas College Rodeo as Chet Boren won the steer wrestling event and Jenna Dallyn took first in goat tying. Boren turned in to the top time in the long round with a 4.7 before clocking a 5.0 in the finals to end the weekend with a 9.7 average and 170 points.

    SNYDER — The South Plains College men’s and women’s rodeo teams picked up a pair of event titles on Saturday night at the Western Texas College Rodeo. Entering the weekend in second in the men’s all-around standings, sophomore Chet Boren added 170 points to his season total, wrestling his way to a first-place overall finish in steer wrestling. Boren clocked the top time with a 4.7 in the long round, which he followed up with a 5.0 in Saturday’s finals, finishing with a 9.7 average, nearly three seconds ahead of second place finisher Burley White (12.2) of Howard College. Boren, who has tallied 705 points to date, closed the gap on Clarendon’s Tegan Smith who is currently first in the men’s all-around standings with 975 points with two rodeos remaining. The top two point-getters in the Southwest region will advance to the College Finals National Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming in June.

    LEVELLAND — The South Plains College men’s and women’s rodeo teams will return to the arena this weekend in Snyder at the Western Texas College Rodeo April 5-7. The Lady Texans come into the weekend ranked first in the Southwest region with 1,406 team points, nearly 200 points ahead of Tarleton State, who is currently second in the regional standing with 1,209 points. The top two teams in the region advance to the College Finals National Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming. The Texans have scrapped their way up the leaderboard and currently sit in sixth place with 1,120 points. The Texans are led by sophomore Chet Boren who is currently second in the men’s all-around standings with 535 points. Clarendon’s Tegan Smith is first in the men’s all-around standings with 935 points. The top point getters will advance to the College Finals National Rodeo.
  • Boren claims tiedown roping event title, Lady Texans add on to region-leading point total Saturday in Sweetwater

    SWEETWATER - The South Plains College men's and women's rodeo teams were back on the saddle this weekend in Sweetwater at the 2018 Ranger College Rodeo. The Texans ended the weekend with a sixth-place team finish with 185 points, while the Lady Texans finished eighth with 25 points. With just three rodeos remaining, the Lady Texans sit atop the Southwest regional standings with 1,406 points, with Tarleton State in second with 1,209 points. The Texans currently sit in sixth place in the region with 1,120 points. Sophomore Chet Boren rode his way to a first-place finish in tiedown roping with a long round time of 9.8, followed by a short run of 8.9, finishing with an overall average of 18.7 and 120 points, capturing the event title and currently ranks second in the region in the all-around standings with 535 points. The top two point holders in the final all-around standings qualify for the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming. Zack Kirkpatrick would tack on 65 points for the Texans in team roping, paring up with Texas Tech's Kade Cotton. The duo ran an 8.5 in the long round followed by a 7.6 in the finals, finishing with a final average of 16.1.
  • Lady Texans capture women's team title at Odessa College Rodeo

    ODESSA — The South Plains College women’s rodeo team extended its lead in the regional standings over the weekend, capturing the women’s team title at the Odessa College Rodeo at the Ector County Coliseum. Sophomore Lariat Larner won the women’s all-around title with 160 points thanks to a pair of top-five finishes as the Lady Texans tallied 410 points. Tarleton State, who came in ranked second in the region, finished sixth with 108.33 points. The Lady Texans rank first in the regional standings with 1,381 points, while Tarleton State is second with 971 points.

    Levelland — The South Plains College men’s and women’s rodeo teams will saddle up on Thursday at the Odessa College Rodeo which runs Feb. 22-24 at the Ector County Coliseum. South Plains will be competing in regional action for the first time since the fall semester when they traveled to Alpine for the Sul Ross State University Rodeo on Nov. 2.  The Lady Texans ride into the weekend sitting atop the Southwest regional standings with 971 team points. South Plains is 100 points ahead of Tarleton State who ranks second in the region with 871 points. The Texans currently sit in seventh in the region with 735 points after five rodeos and will look to climb the rankings beginning this weekend.
  • 18 South Plains student-athletes named to WJCAC Commissioner's Honor Roll

    The Western Junior College Athletic Conference recently announced the members of the WJCAC Commissioner's Honor Roll for Fall 2017 semester, including 18 athletes from South Plains College. Student-athletes had to have a 3.25 GPA or better to be selected.

    ALPINE — The South Plains College men’s and women’s rodeo teams clinched a pair of top 10 finishes in their final rodeo of the fall semester this weekend at the Sul Ross State University Rodeo. The Lady Texans finished fifth overall with 130 points and currently rank first in the region with 971 points. Eastern New Mexico won the women’s team title with 225 points, followed by Weatherford College, Odessa and Tarleton State.

    LEVELLAND — The South Plains College men’s and women’s rodeo teams will return to action this weekend when they travel to Alpine for the Sul Ross State University Rodeo on November 2 – November 4. In their previous outing in Lubbock at the Texas Tech University Rodeo, the Lady Texans claimed their second overall team title and currently rank first in the Southwest Region with 841 points. The Texans rode their way to a third-place finish and currently sit in eighth in the region with 510 points.

    LUBBOCK — The South Plains College men’s and women’s rodeo teams traveled 30 miles down highway 114 to the Texas Tech Equestrian Center over the weekend to compete in the Texas Tech University Rodeo. It would be safe to say things went well as the Lady Texans captured the women’s overall team title and 276 points. The Texans found their stride as well picking up 270 points and a third-place overall finish. The Lady Texans now sit atop the Southwest Regional standings with 841 points. Weatherford College placed second over the weekend with 235 points, while West Texas A&M, Eastern New Mexico, and Tarleton State rounded out the top five. Sophomore Jenna Dallyn won the women’s all-around title and led the Lady Texans with 230 points. Dallyn finished third in goat tying after running a 6.9 in the long round followed by a 7.3 in the short round to finish with a 14.2 average. Dallyn would then go on to place fourth in breakaway roping thanks to a 2.2 run in the long round and a 3.6 mark in the short round to end the stint with a 5.8 average.

A week after claiming the women's all-around team title at the Eastern New Mexico University Rodeo in Portales, the Lady Texans earned a second place finish on Saturday with 130 team points.

The Lady Texans will look for a repeat performance after winning the women’s all-around team title last weekend in Portales at the Eastern New Mexico University Rodeo with 255 points, 60 points ahead of second-place finisher Tarleton State University.

    PORTALES, NM—South Plains College placed four athletes in the final round of the Eastern New Mexico University Rodeo on Saturday as the Lady Texans claimed their first overall team win on the year. The Lady Texans capped off the weekend with 255 total points, nearly 60 points ahead of second place finisher Tarleton State University. Eastern New Mexico, Western Texas and Weatherford College rounded out the top five.
