#1 Texans improve to 20-0, topple Frank Phillips 74-61 Monday

LEVELLAND — Jabori Mcghee scored a game-high 20 points as the top-ranked South Plains College men's basketball team won its 20th consecutive game, besting Frank Phillips 74-61 Monday night at the Texan Dome.

The Texans improve to 20-0 on the season and 6-0 in the WJCAC, and will be on the road Thursday when they travel to Odessa for a 7:30 p.m. tip against the No. 15-ranked Wranglers. The contest will stream live at spctexans.com.

"Our effort was there tonight," South Plains head coach Hayden Sowers said. "We couldn't make shots, and it's hard to win in this league continuously. I'm happy we won, and you look around tonight at the scores in our league, every win is a dog fight. We have to continue to get better, and it's easier to do that coming off a win."

Mcghee dropped in eight of 18 shots from the field over 32 minutes as the Texans shot a 33.3 percent clip from the field. Kerwin Prince provided 15 points and 13 rebounds coming off the bench for South Plains, while Jalen Hampton and Bryson Ogletree each finished with 10 points.

"Kerwin plays with effort and toughness, and he went in there and got 15 for us in 16 minutes, and he goes out there and plays as hard as he can, and it's going to work out for him," Sowers said. "We held them under 70 points again, and we have to continue to get better and accept coaching."

South Plains forced 17 turnovers on the defensive end, which resulted in 18 points on the opposite end of the floor, while also scoring 24 points on second-chance opportunities. The Texans netted 42 points inside the paint and dominated the glass, outrebounding the Plainsmen 61-30 in the contest.

"When you go on the road, you have to control what you can control," Sowers said. "You can control your effort, your toughness, and your ability to not compound your mistakes. We have a lot to work on, which at this time of the year is a good thing. The name of the game is to win the game, and we have to flip the calendar to February and find ways to get better."
