Texans rebound, thump Midland 58-38 Tuesday in Arizona

MESA, AZ — The South Plains College men's basketball team posted their top defensive performance of the season Tuesday, holding Midland College to a season-low scoring total as they thumped the Chaparrals 58-38 at Theo Heap Gymnasium on the campus of Mesa Community College.

The Texans improve to 5-6 on the year and will be back on the hardwood on Wednesday at 4 p.m. MST, 5 p.m. CST against New Mexico Junior College. The contest will stream live at spctexans.com.

South Plains swarmed the Chaps on the defensive end as Midland shot a season-low 26.4 percent (14-53) from the floor and were just 5 of 20 from the 3-point line. The Texans had their way down low, winning the rebound battle 37-25 and netted 28 points inside the paint. South Plains forced 12 turnovers in the contest resulting in 13 points on the offensive end and tallied 11 points on second chance opportunities.

SPC shot 41.7 percent (20-48) from the floor, led by Kieves Turner who finished with a team-high 12 points, six assists, and five boards over 36 minutes. DJ Avery poured in 10 points and snagged five boards in 31 minutes, while Khalifa Sakho dropped in eights points, grabbed eight rebounds, and swatted a season-high five blocked shots coming off the bench.

Following Wednesday's contest, South Plains will wrap up their four-game road stint in the desert with a 1 p.m. MST, 2 p.m. CST matchup against Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Thursday in Chandler, AZ.
