LEVELLAND—The fifth-ranked South Plains College Texans improved to 5-0 following a 113-75 rout of Collin County on Friday night at the Texan Dome.
Jordan Brangers continues to be a consistent threat from the perimeter for the Texans as the Texas Tech commit totaled 28 points on 10-of-21 shooting including 7-of-17 from the 3-point line.
Sophomore Justice Green provided a spark off the bench for South Plains as the Tuscaloosa, Alabama native finished with 23 points in 19 minutes, knocking down five of his eight 3s attempted. Roberto Gallinat scored in double figures for the fourth time this season finishing the contest with 15 points and five boards.
"I thought we played in spurts and hit some shots, and for the most part did a pretty good job," South Plains head coach Steve Green said. "He (Justice Green) is an incredible force and brings so much energy. We're sitting over there and the balls on the floor and it's a comforting feeling knowing he's involved because he's going to come up with it."
The Cougars began the game with a 6-2 run which was shortly erased when Montell McRae's two-handed dunk with 17:10 left in the first half gave the Texans a 9-8 lead. Grantham Gillard found the net from behind the arc to extend the lead to 25-15 with 11:42 remaining.
A long 3 from Brangers from the right wing pushed the lead to 40-26 with under six minutes to play. A steal from Raquan Mitchell preceded by a monstrous one-handed dunk gave the Texans a 47-32 advantage at the 2:41 mark of the first half.
"We shared the ball and everyone shot the ball well," Brangers said. "We got the ball in the paint early and got things started offensively. Coach Green said at halftime that you have to win the first five minutes of the second half, so we just came out and tried to execute. Scoring is a great feeling, but if my teams winning every game and I'm only scoring five points a game I can live with that."
The Texans continued to find success offensively in the final 20 minutes as Brangers found the bucket with a 3 from the top of the key with 13:30 remaining to give South Plains a 72-52 lead. Justice Green hit consecutive 3s with less than nine minutes to play to extend the lead to 81-54. Green topped off his night with another trey from the right side of the key, extending the lead 108-67 with 2:10 remaining in the contest.
"We're trying to go out there and dominate every possession and every minute of the game," Justice Green said. "I just came out there in the second half trying to execute the offense and lock down on defense. We were kind of shaky in the first 20 minutes but after that were able to lock in and execute."
