Texans drop showdown vs. No. 2 Trinity Valley, 77-65

Pat Birt led the way for South Plains with 15 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field.  Marlon Jones and Lincoln Davis added 12 and 10 points each, while Andre Spight and David Kadiri each chipped in with nine.

South Plains raced out to an early nine-point lead, aided in part by two made free throws by Birt following a technical foul called on a Trinity Valley player who kicked a chair after being taken out of the game.

Trinity Valley would roar back with nine consecutive points to tie the game, leading to a competitive first half the resulted in a 39-39 tie at intermission.

The second half remained competitive until the final four minutes.

With 4:04 remaining on the clock, Spight knocked down a shot to bring the Texans to within three, 67-64, but Trinity Valley would close out the game by outscoring the Texans 10-1 to claim the victory between two teams who both advanced to last year's NJCAA Tournament quarterfinal.

South Plains (1-1) will return to action when they host the four-team Texan Classic Nov. 7-8 at the Texan Dome.  Teams scheduled to compete are Mesa College, Coastal Bend, New Mexico JC, and South Plains.
