The Texans did not take the lead for good until sophomore Andre Spight jumper at the 12:38 mark put the Texans ahead 52-51 and sparked a 12-4 run.
Weatherford would get back to within six, 66-60, but the Texans closed the game by outscoring the Coyotes 14-3 for the remainder of the contest to escape with the win.
South Plains (1-0) had four players in double figures, including Konofino, and was led by Spight and Lincoln Davis who had 13 each. Lincoln Davis chipped in with 12 for the Texans who finished 28-of-57 from the floor and 18-of-23 from the free throw line.
The Texans' next game will be Sunday at 12 p.m. and will feature an NJCAA showdown with second-ranked Trinity Valley Community College.
