LEVELLAND – The South Plains College Texans and Lady Texans will host Frank Phillips College Thursday, Feb. 20 in a men's/women's doubleheader that begins at 5:45 p.m. at the Texan Dome in Levelland. The women play first and the men follow at 7:45 p.m.
To support and promote breast cancer awareness, South Plains College is asking fans to wear pink and the Lady Texans will be warming up in 'Team Pink' shirts. Fans can also purchase raffle tickets for an opportunity to win a Kindle Fire. Tickets are $2 each or three for $5. Though encouraged and appreciated, the winner does not need to be present to win.
With the season winding down, both the Texans and Lady Texans are looking to pick up victories to capture the best seed possible for next month's Region 5 Tournament in Lubbock.
The seventh-ranked Texans (23-4, 10-3 WJCAC) control their own destiny and are guaranteed the top seed at the Region 5 tournament with victories in their final three games but have little room for error as Howard is currently tied atop the standings with South Plains. The Texans own the tiebreaker over the Hawks, thanks to a season sweep.
South Plains and Howard also have New Mexico lurking a half-game back; Odessa 1-½ games back; and Western Texas only two games back in the standings to put five teams in contention for only four postseason spots, setting up potentially a very exciting end to the conference season.
The Texans are 8-0 at home on the season.
With only three games to go, the Lady Texans hold a 1-½ game lead over Midland for the third spot in the conference.
The Lady Texans (14-10, 8-3) are looking to avenge a 68-62 loss at Frank Phillips on Jan. 20 and have been tough playing at the Texan Dome with a 6-1 record this season.
Not only are the Lady Texans looking to hold on to the third spot, but victories in their final three games would allow South Plains to sneak into the second seed heading into the Region 5 tournament that begins March 5.
South Plains' season finale Feb. 27 is against Odessa, which could be a game that is played for that second spot if both teams win out between now and then.
