Texans throttle Western Texas College in season's final home contest
LEVELLAND - The South Plains College Texans had their third highest scoring total of the season Monday night, pouring in 111 points against an overwhelmed Western Texas College team in the final home game for six Texan sophomores.

South Plains trailed after Western Texas was the first to strike in the opening moments of the game. The Texans would not allow the Westerners to hang around long as the broke away from their opponent with a 13-0 run when the game was knotted up at seven apiece four minutes into the game and would extend that lead to as many as 21 before heading to halftime with a 19 point cushion, 49-30.

The Texans did not let off the gas in the second half either, exploding for 62 second half points to finish with a 111-67 rout of their conference foe.

Marshall Henderson led five Texans scoring double-figures with 19 points and Tymell Murphy just missed a double-double finishing with 17 points and nine rebounds.

Stanton Kidd recorded his fifth double-double of the season by chipping in 16 points and grabbing 10 boards. Deshaunt Walker had an efficient shooting night making 5-of-7 from the field and 4-of-6 from downtown to finish with 14 points. Alex Giraudier finished with a season high 13 points and got to the free throw line eight times, making 7-of-8. Anthony Walker had his second highest scoring output of the season with 12.

Greg Gainey scored nine points and grabbed six rebounds, while Corey Spence dished out eight assists and committed no turnovers filling in for point guard Devonte Smith late in the game.

Walker, Derrell Edwards, Kidd, Henderson, Murphy, and Gainey are the six sophomores who played their final game inside the confines of the Texan Dome. After the game they celebrated clinching the Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC) title with the rest of their teammates by cutting down the net. South Plains clinched the title last Thursday at Howard. It is the first conference title for the Texans since 2007 and the 11th in school history.

The Texans (28-0, 13-0) will try to finish up an undefeated regular season when they travel to Roswell, N.M. Thursday afternoon for their season finale with the New Mexico Military Institute Broncos (11-16, 4-9). If successful, the 29th consecutive victory would match the 29 straight wins the 2002-03 squad earned after beginning the season 2-2.

Thursday's game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. (CST) tip-off and fans can listen to the action on KLVT 1230 AM or www.klvtradio.com. KLVT's Michael Wiiest will call the courtside action.
