LEVELLAND - The South Plains College athletic department held a press conference Tuesday afternoon to announce the National Letter of Intent signing for sophomore sharpshooter Marshall Henderson.
It was safe to say most in the crowd gathered in the Texan Club lounge already knew Henderson's future college as he announced last month he would attend the University of Mississippi. Twelfth year head coach Steve Green got straight to the point as he immediately announced to the crowd of fans that Henderson "was going to go to Ole Miss and be a Rebel next year."
Henderson led the Texans in scoring with just less than 20 points per game and has racked up the post-season awards being named Most Valuable Player of the Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC), All Region 5, as well as a first team All-America selection.
Ole Miss head coach Andy Kennedy believes Henderson will contribute immediately.
"We are very excited to add Marshall to our program," said the sixth-year Ole Miss head coach. "He is an outstanding shooter who will bring much needed scoring to our backcourt next season."
Henderson, who made 128-of-312 (.410) attempts from beyond the arc will add an obvious deep scoring threat to a team that made only 139 3-point shots total during the 2011-12 season.
Coach Steve Green said being able to watch Henderson move on to the next stage was very satisfying to him.
Henderson, meanwhile, is very appreciative of his time in Levelland.
"I give them all the credit in the world. They (Green and assistant coach Hank Plona) gave me a chance to come here and being on this great team, I do not know how we all got here, but they are really talented."
Henderson is the third Texan to sign this year, joining Greg Gainey (UT-Arlington) andStanton Kidd (North Carolina Central) who signed during the early signing period. The Texans are expected to announce additional signings in the coming weeks as sophomoresTymell Murphy, Deshaunt Walker, and Derrell Edwards are still in the process of making a decision.
