After falling behind 4-0 on the first two Chap possessions of the game, SPC looked like they might be able to tame their opponent when they went on a 14-4 scoring run that gave them their largest lead of the game, 14-8, after a deep three by Brandon Thompson.

The Chaparrals countered with a 14-3 run of their own and eventually took a six point lead to halftime, 32-26.

Far from being out of the game, the Texans closed the gap to within three points just a little over four minutes into the second half when freshman Derrell Edwards hit a jumper to make the score 37-34. Minutes later, Midland looked to be in complete control of the game when they went on a scoring spree that saw them lead by as many as 14 points on three separate occasions.

Trailing 61-47 with only 3:24 to go in the ballgame, Edwards scored seven points in a stretch that saw SPC score 10 unanswered to cut the Chap lead to four points with just over a minute left in the ballgame.

That was as close as the Texans could manage to get as they were forced to foul and send the Chaps to the free throw line - where Midland shot 75-percent for the night - and made 7-of-8 in the final minute to move to 16-2 overall and 2-0 in conference action.

SPC will return to the court on Monday, January 17 when they travel to Snyder to take on the Western Texas College Westerners. Western Texas (13-2, 1-1) lost to Odessa 62-57 on Monday night at home, and defeated Frank Phillips 61-54 Thursday night in Borger.
