Gainey powers Texans to 10th victory of season
PHOENIX, Ariz. - Greg Gainey scored 17 of his game high 25 points in the first half to help propel the SPC Texans to their sixth consecutive victory to improve their record to 10-4 overall.

With SPC clinging to a 24-21 lead just over 11 minutes into the game the Texans took control by outscoring their opponent 18-4 over the next six minutes to take a 17 point lead, with Gainey scoring 11 points during that stretch. SPC would eventually take a 44-30 advantage into intermission.

After the Texans increased their lead to 17 in the opening minutes of the second half, they allowed Phoenix to claw their way back into the game as the Bears scored 10 unanswered points to come to within seven. Gainey answered when he picked up an offensive rebound and put it back to end the Texan scoring drought. Moments later, after another Phoenix score, Deshaunt Walkerpassed inside to Gainey for another bucket.

Phoenix would get as close to six points on a few different occasions before succumbing to the Texans by that amount, 85-79.

Derrell Edwards had another big night as he made 4-of-5 shots from the field in addition to 5-of-6 from the charity stripe to finish with 14 points. Sophomore Kenny Brown added 13, while Malcom Miller also scored double-digits with 10. Brandon Thompson chipped in with nine while playing nearly 39 minutes.

For the game, the Texans shot 54-percent from the floor, making 32-of-59 attempts.

South Plains College will wrap up their Arizona road trip when they try to stretch their winning streak to seven games against Mesa Community College (5-8) Thursday at 3 p.m. CST.
