Texans Fall to Lon Morris 53-51

JACKSONVILLE, Texas - The South Plains College Texans missed 9 of their first 10 shots on their way to shooting only 23-percent from the field during the first half, falling behind 18-10 14-minutes into the game. Nevertheless, the Texans ended the first half on an 11-3 run to head to the locker room with a one-point lead.

A little over five minutes into the second half, SPC surrendered the lead when a Lon Morris post made a shot that was the beginning of a 6-0 run that gave the Bearcats a 32-27 advantage.

SPC responded when Greg Gainey made a shot inside the paint and was fouled by a Bearcat defender, sending Gainey to the line who then completed the three-point play. Gainey tied the game on his team's next possession with another drive inside the paint, making the game 32-32.

With just over seven minutes remaining in the game, Derrell Edwards hit a three-point shot that gave SPC a seven point advantage 44-37.

Lon Morris responded, and with one minute remaining the score was all knotted up 51-51.

A couple of free throws for Lon Morris and a missed half-court shot by Derrell Edwards ended the game with a 53-51 loss, dropping SPC to 4-1 on the season.

Edwards and Gainey led the Texans with 18 and 17 points each, respectively.

The Texans will look to get back on the winning track tomorrow at 12 p.m. when they face Jacksonville College.
