Texans Advance To Region 5 Championship
LUBBOCK, Texas - The South Plains College Texans have advanced to the Region 5 Championship game as they defeated Collin County Community College 79-63 Monday night at the Rip Griffin Center. The win improves the Texans overall record to 27-3, but they have another big test tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. as they will take on Midland College, who defeated Howard 60-48, again at the Griffin Center.

After Collin's Gilberto Clavell got his team on the board with the first score of the game, the Texans, led by Hugh Mingo, scored 10 unanswered points to take a 10-2 lead just over 3-minutes into the contest. Mingo scored eight of the Texans first 10 points during that run.

By the midway point of the first half it appeared that the Texans were red hot and ready to put Collin away early as they led 22-10. For the remainder of the half SPC would not give the crowd a reason to think it was not going to be their night as they outscored Collin 12-2 over the next five minutes on their way to a 40-24 halftime lead. The Texans led by as many as 20-points in the first half.

In the first four minutes of the second half SPC stretched their lead to 23, with Bo Ingram scoring 6-points.

Down 23-points, Collin County still had some fight left in them. With 10-minutes remaining in the game the Cougars of Collin County had decreased their deficit the 13-points. After a Hugh Mingo field goal increased the Texan lead to 15-points, Collin County went on a 12-4 scoring run to get within 7-points with only 6:45 remaining in the game.

The Texans answered the Cougar threat with six unanswered points of their own and would not allow the Cougars to get any closer than 8-points for the remainder of the game as they made several key free throws down the stretch and won by 16-points.

Mingo led the Texans with 25-points on 11-of-16 shooting from the field. David Tairu scored 23-points and pulled down eight rebounds, while Bo Ingram added 14 points and eight rebounds. Point guard Landon Tatum scored seven and dished out a game high 10-assists.

SPC has played Midland twice this season.  The Chaps from Midland have handed the Texans two of their three losses this season.
