Texans Roll Past Thunderbirds

LEVELLAND, Texas - The South Plains College Texans, ranked 8th in the latest NJCAA polls, rolled past New Mexico Junior College 87-73 Thursday at the Texan Dome.  The win improves SPC to 25-3 for the season and 13-3 in Western Junior College Athletic Conference action.


Ladarius Hall came out firing, scoring eight of his 13 points in the first five minutes of the ballgame and eight of the first 12 of the game for the Texans.  

With the game tied 14-14 seven minutes into the game, SPC went on a 6-0 run to go up by six points.  The Thunderbirds would close the gap to three at the midway point, but thats as close as the Texans would allow them to get as they outscored their opponent 24-16 for the remainder of the half.

The Texans came out hot in the second half, scoring the first seven points to jump out to an 18 point lead.  The Texans would eventually extend that lead to a game high 22 points before settling for a 14 point victory, 87-73.

SPC had six sophomores who played their final game as Texans in the Texan Dome.  Philip Outley played 21 minutes, scoring five points and dishing out six assists; Landon Tatum played just under 19 minutes and threw out five assists; David Tairu, who will be playing at Texas Tech next year, played 26 plus minutes, scoring 20 points; Ladarius Hall played 17 minutes and scored 13 points; Hugh Mingo played just under 25 minutes and recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds; and Markhuri Sanders-Frison played 20 minutes, scoring 8 points and pulled in seven rebounds.

The Texans will return to the hardwood on Sunday, March 8 at 2 p.m. when they open up play in the Region 5 tourney at Lubbock Christian University.
