Texans Suffer First Loss

Levelland, Texas - The South Plains College Texans lost their first game of the 2008-2009 season 69-67 to drop to 10-1 overall and 1-1 in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference.

The game went down to the wire as Odessa led 66-62 with 31 seconds to play. David Tairu then drove to the basket and proceeded to make an acrobatic shot and was fouled on the play to set up a potential 3-point play. Tairu made the free throw to bring the Texans to within point. With only four seconds to go, Tairu again made a great shot, this time giving South Plains the lead. However, an Odessa player quickly threw a hailmary to Tommie Sykes who converted two points for Odessa with less than two seconds left on the clock.

Sophomore guard David Tairu led the Texans with 17 points. Landon Tatum finished the game with 14 points and six assists, while Bo Ingram added 10 points. Myles Walker had a big night defensively, swatting away five shots. Walker also added eight points for the Texans. Also for SPC, Tramar Sutherland had six points, Antwain Thomas scored five, Hugh Mingo added four, Markhuri Sanders-Frison was held to two, and Ladarius Hall had one point.

The Texans will enjoy a little time off before traveling to Arizona for the Scottsdale Tournament held January 1-3, 2009.
