South Plains rodeo places nine in finals of Howard College Rodeo

BIG SPRING — The South Plains College men's and women's rodeo teams placed nine in the Howard College Rodeo finals Saturday night as the Lady Texans took fifth in the final team standings and the Texans placed eighth on the weekend.

The women's team totaled 105 points over three days, as Tarleton State won the women's team title with 345 points. The Texans notched 190 points, with Western Texas amassing the top point total with 430 points. South Plains will wrap up the season next weekend when they travel to Stephenville for the Tarleton State Stampede April 18-20.

Dawson Loewen led the Texans with a second-place finish in steer wrestling, posting a 4.9 in the long round and a 5.9 in the finals to pick up 135 points. Brey Yore placed sixth in steer wrestling, clocking a 6.5 in the long round and a 5.9 in the finals, adding 40 points. Cayden Schulz was 10th overall in the event, going 7.0 in the long round but no timed in Saturday's finals. Yore added 15 points in team roping, riding with Titan Quigg of Texas Tech. The pair turned in a 6.3 in the long round but no timed in the finals to finish with a 106.3 average.

Kreece Dearing earned a spot in the finals in tiedown roping after a run of 9.9 in the long round but missed in the finals to take ninth overall. Maddie Bews finished with 65 points in breakaway roping for the Lady Texans, running a 2.3 in the long round but missed in the finals, placing sixth in the event overall.

Allie Murphy added 50 points in barrel racing, turning in a 16.99 in the long round and a 22.43 in the finals, good enough for seventh place. Haidyn Kracht placed 11th in barrels for South Plains, going 17.5 in the long round but no timed in the finals on Saturday.
