SPC track and field teams compete in final meet before nationals Friday in Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE— The South Plains College men's and women's track and field teams competed in their final indoor meet before nationals Friday at the Arkansas Qualifier at the Tyson Track Center at the University of Arkansas.

South Plains will not look to add to the trophy case when they travel to Gainesville, Florida for the 2024 Indoor National Championships March 1-2 at the Alachua County Sports and Events Center.

"Andrew had a few struggles today, and he's still young and figuring things out, and he had a good jump today," South Plains head coach Erik Vance said. "Once he gets some things figured out, he's going to put up some big marks. I thought Harry did a really good job doing multiple events, and he got in what he needed to do going into the national meet."

Freshman Andrew Stone placed first in the men's long jump for South Plains, posting a final mark of 25' 3.25". Sophomore Harry Crosby was sixth in the long jump, going 23' 8.75". In the men's triple jump, Mouhameth Fall placed fourth with a mark of 50' 2.5". Shamar Reid turned in a fourth-place finish in the men's shot put with a throw of 54' 5.25".

In the men's pole vault, sophomore Django Segovia took seventh with a mark of 15' 1". Tajae Francis notched a sixth-place finish in the men's 60-meter dash, posting a 6.93 for South Plans. The Texans would close out the meet with a third-place finish in the men's 4x400 relay, clocking a final time of 3:11.57.

On the women's side, Rushana Dwyer went 2:09.46 in the 800 meters, good enough for sixth overall. Sophomore Lilliana Guerrero was 10th in the 800, posting a 2:13.13. In the women's long jump, freshman Sydney Roqueburn was eighth with a mark of 17' 6". Lilian Torrez hit a national qualifying mark on the women's mile posting a 5:09.79. The Lady Texans closed out the meet with a second-place finish in the 4x400 relay, clocking a 3:42.65.

"We have to highlight what our women's 800 did today, and they had a really good day and continue to get better," Vance said. "Our 800 men's group keeps getting better, and we were able to get some things done this week we needed to. The practice intensity from here out has to be there every day. We're going to keep working and keep getting better, and try and put ourselves in a good spot by the time we get to Florida."
