SPC track and field teams wrap up second indoor meet in Houston

HOUSTON — The South Plains College men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up their second indoor meet of the season over the weekend at the Robert Platt Invitational on the campus of the University of Houston.

"I feel like we got better this week," South Plains head coach Erik Vance said. "We got back from our first meet and had some kids who had only been on campus for a few days and had a chance to look at where we were at and work on the things we needed to. I feel like we had a chance to get settled in, and had a lot of improvements across the board this week."

In the heptathlon, sophomore Harry Crosby turned in a sixth-place finish with a final total of 5040 points. Shamar Reid took third in the men's shot put and hit a national qualifying mark, turning in a final mark of 55' 9.25".

"I thought our field athletes did well this weekend," Vance said. "We had several new qualifiers, and Amber was out sick this week, and she came out and had a new all-time personal best after missing the first couple of days this week. After all the travel, she did really well. Harry had a really good meet, and he showed he's going to be a tough person to beat this year."

In the men's triple jump, Mouhameth Fall and Mitchell Allen each hit national marks, as Fall placed fourth with a jump of 50' 2", while Allen was eighth in 48' 1.75". Isaiah Patrick finished fourth in the men's long jump for South Plains, hitting a national mark with a jump of 24' 7.25".

The Texan's DMR team comprised of Hamdani Benahmed, Mouatez Sikiou, Matthew Gordon, and Divan Du Plooy placed second and hit a national mark with a time of 10:00.98. Patrick then took fifth in the men's 60 hurdles, clocking a 7.96 for South Plans. In the men's 800 meters, Benahmed hit a national mark and placed fourth in the event with a final time of 1:52.29.

On the women's side, freshman Lilian Torrez placed sixth in the women's mile placing sixth overall with a final time of 5:01.69. Torrez would then take fifth in the women's 3000 meters, clocking a 9:57.24.

The Lady Texan's DMR team made up of Lilliana Guerrero, Leticia Quingostas, Rushana Dwyer, and Torrez placed first in the event, clocking a national mark of 12:20.76. Sophomore Amber Simpson turned in a national qualifying mark in the pentathlon for South Plains, posting 2856 points on the weekend.

"Our women's distance group had a great day, and we got to put Lilian Torrez on the track for the first time this weekend, and she anchored our DMR, and then followed up with two really impressive distance performances," Vance said. "I felt like across the board we were able to improve and get better, and we are going to continue to work every day."
