South Plains College track and field teams close out first indoor meet Saturday in Lubbock

LUBBOCK — The South Plains College men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2024 indoor season Saturday, competing at the Stan Scott Memorial at the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center.

"I thought we had some good moments today, and you can tell we have some kids who worked hard over the break," South Plains head coach Erik Vance said. "At the same time, you can tell this was our first time out and we still have a good ways to go. I think we will see a good bit of success this year from our field events, and the way they competed today, I think there is a good possibility we can get a lot out of that group."

Sophomore All-American Rushana Dwyer won the women's 800 meters for South Plains, posting a 2:18.34, while sophomore Lilliana Guerrero was fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:22.19. Leticia Quingostas went 57.34 to take sixth in the women's 400 meters, while Guerrero was fourth in the 1000 meters with a time of 2:59.86.

"I talked to both Lilliana and Rushana, and compared to where they started last year you can tell they have put in the work," Vance said. "Those two were big contributors to our team last year, and I think we will see more of the same from those two, and possibly even better. Overall, I don't feel like our kids let the moment get to them, especially our freshmen athletes, and we competed against a good field today. The big thing is, we need to try and get some good training in the next 10-12 days and shake off some rust, and put ourselves in a position where we can go down to Houston and really compete."

Harry Crosby notched a second-place finish in the men's long jump for South Plains, clearing the bar at 23' 9.5". Isaiah Patrick was fifth in the long jump, turning a mark of 22' 10". The Texans went three-four in the men's triple jump, as Mouhameth Fall was third in 50' 8", while Mitchell Allen was fourth in 49' 11".

The Texans' Shamar Reed placed second in the men's shot put with a throw of 55' 8.5", while Matthew Gordon was fourth in the men's 800 meters with a time of 1:56.24. Hamdani Benahmed turned in a third-place finish in the men's 1000 meters with a time of 2:26.48, while Divan DuPlooy placed third in the men's mile run in 4:14.29, and was fourth in the 3000 meters with a time of 8:32.82.

South Plains will be back on the track Jan. 26-27 when they travel to Houston for the Robert Platt Invitational at the Yeoman Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Houston.
