South Plains' Allie Murphy wins $100k, Texan Barrel Race title in Abilene

LEVELLAND — The South Plains College women's rodeo program was well represented over the weekend as freshman Allie Murphy, a native of Justiceburg, Texas, and her horse, Shawnee Ta Fame, won the $100,000 jackpot at the Texan Barrel Race, held at the Taylor Telecom Arena in Abilene.

"I feel extremely blessed," Murphy said. "I couldn't have done this without everyone who supported and assisted me through the years. I'm very appreciative of the people who helped me get to this position."

Murphy posted the top time in 14.41, competing against hundreds of the top barrel racers from around the country. Murphy claimed the top prize in the nearly $850,000 awarded to competitors and said she was extremely happy with her performance in Abilene.

"My main goal for the weekend was to have smooth, consistent runs," Murphy said. "I really just wanted to go out and be myself and do what we do best. I feel that's exactly what we did in both runs, and I couldn't have been more proud of each one."

Murphy and the SPC rodeo program will be back in the arena this weekend in Lubbock, competing at the 2023 Texas Tech University Rodeo, slated for Oct. 26-28 at Cook's Garage. Action gets underway on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
