LEVELLAND — Amassing a 32-1 record and capturing the WJCAC and Region V titles, South Plains women's basketball head coach Cayla Petree has been named the 2020 United States Marine Corps/WBCA Two-Year College National Coach of the Year.

Petree has guided the Lady Texans to one of the best seasons in program history, recently earning a No. 2 seed to the NJCAA Women's Basketball National Tournament, the program's highest seed to date. Earning WJCAC Coach of the Year honors for the second straight season, Petree will be making her second consecutive trip to the national tournament after advancing to the Elite Eight last season.

Petree will be presented with the Pat Summitt Trophy at the NCAA Women's Final Four in New Orleans, awarded in recognition of the iconic University of Tennessee coach. Petree has guided the Lady Texans to their second consecutive season with at least 30 wins as South Plains looks to capture the program's first national title in school history when they tip-off in Lubbock.

"The United States Marine Corps proudly recognizes Cayla Petree for her leadership with the Texans and her commitment to women's basketball," said Lieutenant Colonel Christian Devine in a press release on Wednesday. "The hard work and dedication needed to achieve this recognition from her peers embody the fighting spirit of all Marines."
