LEVELLAND — The South Plains College men's and women's track and field teams will compete in their final indoor meet before nationals on Friday at the Texas Tech Matador Qualifier at the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center.
The Texans and Lady Texans have combined for 46 national qualifying marks to date and hold six of the top marks in the country. The Matador Qualifier, which gets underway with field events at 3 p.m., will consist of teams from Angelo State, Eastern New Mexico University, Lubbock Christian, McMurry, New Mexico Junior College, Southern University of New Orleans, Tarleton State University, Texas A&M – Commerce, and Texas Tech University, among others.
Per the Texas Tech athletics website, the Matador Qualifier will be streaming live on their website, which can be accessed at the link below. Live results will also be available via Flotrack, which can be accessed with the link at the bottom of the page. Entrance and tickets for spectators can be purchased at the north entrance of the track.
Top marks in the NJCAA:
Ranked No. 5 in the latest USTFCCCA national poll, the Texans hold two of the top marks in the country. In their opening meet of the indoor season, sophomore Asani Hylton posted the top high jump mark in the NJCAA, clearing 6' 11" at the Red Raider Invitational.
Freshman Rylan Olguin holds the top mark in the men's pole vault, clearing 16' 0" at the Tyson Invitational last weekend. Altogether, the Texans have posted 15 marks that rank in the top 10 in the NJCAA and will look to add to that list in Lubbock.
Coming in at No. 7 in the week four national ranking, the Lady Texans have recorded four of the top marks to date. Freshman Gladys Jemaiyo has posted two of the top times in the country in the women's 3000 and 5000 meters.
Jemaiyo set a national record in the women's 5000, clocking a 16:51.52 at the Charlie Thomas Invitational, breaking the previous record by over four seconds. Jemaiyo also posted the top time in the 3000 in College Station, running a 9:54.13.
The Lady Texans also hold the top DRM time to date, turning in a 12:19.70 at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville. Freshman Dorcus Ewoi posted the top mark in the women's mile run a week ago in Fayetteville, running a 5:02.31.
Sophomore jumper Ruth Usoro continues to be one of the top jump specialists in the country, posting two of the top marks in the women's long and triple jump. Usoro has the second-best mark in the long jump with a mark of 19' 10.75", and also has the second top mark in the triple jump with a mark of 40' 7.75".
