Texans, Lady Texans host Midland College Wednesday on 'Meat the Texans' night at the Texan Dome

LEVELLAND — The South Plains College men's and women's basketball teams are set to open conference play on Wednesday on 'Meat the Texans' night at the Texan Dome.

The women's game is slated for a 5:45 p.m. tip, with the men's game to get underway at 7:30 p.m. Both games will be streaming live at spctexans.com and Michael Wiiest of KLVT Radio Levelland will call the courtside action with pregame set for 5:30 p.m. Fantastic barbecue prepared by teams participating in the barbecue cook-off contest will be available for $6 per plate for adults (12 and up), and $3 for children (6-11). Children 5 and under eat free. BBQ will be served beginning at 5:30 p.m. 

Ranked second in the country the Texans enter Wednesday's showdown with an 8-0 record on the year after two more wins this past weekend in Dallas. South Plains defeated Seminole State 67-59 on Nov. 23 and downed Cowley County 97-68 on Saturday.

Sophomore Gaige Prim leads South Plains with 22.8 points per game as the sophomore from Colorado is shooting over 67 percent from the floor on the year. Sophomore Trey Wade is averaging 13 points per game as the Texans are averaging 87.8 points and 41.5 rebounds per game as a team.

Midland comes into Wednesday night with an overall record of 3-5 as the Chaps have lost three of their last four games. Midland is averaging just 65.1 points per game on the year, led by freshman Montre Gipson who leads the team with 18.5 points per game and is shooting 55.5 percent from the field.

The Lady Texans head into Wednesday ranked No. 15 in the country and are 10-1 on the season to date. South Plains picked up three wins over the Thanksgiving break, defeating Grayson 89-54 on Nov. 23 before pounding Garden City 90-54 on Saturday. The Lady Texans returned home on Sunday afternoon where they defeated Lamar College 106-23.

South Plains is led by sophomore Keke Hunter who is averaging 18.4 points per game and is shooting over 60 percent from the floor on the year. Sarah Shematsi is averaging over 14 points per game and sophomore Gabbie Green is shooting over 50 percent from the floor and averaging 13.3 points per game. The Lady Texans rank first in the country in total points (1025) and third in the country with 93.2 points per game.

Midland brings an 8-2 record into Wednesday night as the Lady Chaps have won three of their last four games. Averaging 70.2 points per game and shooting 40.1 percent from the field, Midland is led by sophomore forward Lana Maroy who is averaging 13.6 points per game and shooting 45.2 percent from the floor on the year.
