WJCAC Basketball Spotlight: South Plains travels to Frank Phillips College Monday night

LEVELLAND — The South Plains College men's and women's basketball teams will return to the hardwood on Monday when they travel to Borger to take on Frank Phillips College. The Lady Texans will tip at 5:45 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30.

The games will be streaming live at spctexans.com, and Michael Wiiest of KLVT Radio Levelland will call the courtside action.

The Lady Texans enter Monday night fresh off a 58-44 victory over Midland College on Feb. 1 at the Texan Dome. La'Praisjah Johnson netted a career-high 21 points as the Lady Texans improved to 15-9 on the year and 2-6 in the WJCAC. South Plains fell to the Lady Plainsmen 68-58 in their first meeting on Dec. 2 at the Texan Dome as Chantel Govan finished with 13 points on 5 of 12 shooting for the Lady Texans while Gabbie Green chipped in eight points and Mikayla Kuehne inked five points and grabbed eight boards

Frank Phillips comes into the contest ranked No. 13 in the country in the latest NJCAA polls, sitting at 17-3 on the year and 6-2 in the WJCAC. The Lady Plainsmen fell to Odessa 64-53 Monday night in Odessa, but have won 16 of their last 18 and are 5-0 at home this season.  Frank Phillips is averaging 72 points per game, shooting 40 percent from the floor and average 39 boards per game. Sophomore Kiara Shoals is averaging 19.6 points per game despite shooting just 39 percent from the field.

The Texans come in as winners of six of their last eight including a 75-64 victory over Midland College on Feb. 1 at the Dome. The Texans blasted the Plainsmen 93-59 in their first meeting on Dec. 2 as Jordan Brangers led all scorers with 20 points and was 6 of 12 from 3 over 27 minutes. Deshawn Corprew totaled 14 points, six assists, and five boards while Christopher Orlina pitched in with 14 points on 6 of 7 shooting in 26 minutes. South Plains is 15-6 on the year and 7-2 in the WJCAC, including a 3-1 mark on the road in conference play.

Frank Phillips has won three of its last four and nearly knocked off No. 8 Odessa College on Feb. 1 as the Wranglers escaped with an 83-80 victory over the Plainsmen at home. Averaging 78.5 points per game and shooting 47.1 percent from the floor, Frank Phillips is 4-4 at home this season. The Plainsmen come into the contest with an overall record of 11-12 including a 3-6 mark in the WJCAC.

Following Monday's games, South Plains will return home on Thursday, Feb. 8 when they host Howard College.
